Susan Newsom

Susan Burks Newsom of Levelland went to be with her lord and savior on Friday, February 7, 2025.

Susan was born April 20th, 1943, in Dallas, Texas, to Mary and Eddy Burks. She was raised by her mother Mary and devoted stepfather Ralph Giesecke. She attended school in Dallas and graduated from Sunset High School in Oak Cliff in 1961. She was active in school and sports and was a member of the Bisonette Drill Team.

One of Susan’s favorite things to do as a child was to visit her cousin Linda (Ramp) Neal on Linda’s family farm in West Texas. When she graduated high school, upon the urging of her cousin Linda, she came to Levelland to attend South Plains College where she met her future husband, Jimmy Newsom. They were married on July 27th, 1963, and were married for 61 years.

She was a lifelong homemaker and worked at R&W Spraying as well as the Hockley County USDA FSA office where she retired in 1997. Interaction with local farmers was a highlight of her years of service. Susan will be remembered as devout Christian, faithful wife, devoted mother and a loving friend. She was steadfast in her faith, fiercely loyal and unbending in her devotion to her family and friends. Everywhere Jimmy and Susan lived in their 61 years together they created a community of lifelong friends who loved and adored their company, and she will be missed by so many.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Jimmy Newsom of Levelland, four sons: Kevin Newsom and wife Carla of Rocksprings, TX; their children Logan Newsom and wife Jenny Bett of Olton, TX, Conner Newsom and fiancé Katy of Utopia, TX, Cooper Newsom of Lubbock TX, and wife Daitlyne, and Cydney Newsom of Rocksprings, TX; son Cory Newsom and wife Kim of Lubbock, TX, their daughters Taylor Williams and husband Brock Williams, Chandler Davis and husband Calob Davis; son Steve and wife Cindy Newsom of Levelland, their children Raenee Newsom of Lubbock, TX, and Keegan Newsom and fiancé Kandace Pope of Lubbock, TX; son Matt Newsom and girlfriend Becky McCutchen of Levelland, and his sons Payton Newsom and wife Lynelle of Levelland, Kennedy Newsom of Lubbock and Mason Newsom of Levelland. Great-grandchildren Graham Newsom, Gracie Newsom, Cub Newsom, Caroline Williams, Sullivan Newsom, Braylin Newsom and Walker Newsom. She will be missed by her many nieces and nephews, whom she adored.

She was preceded in death by her father Eddy Burks, mother Mary Giesecke, stepfather Ralph Giesecke, brothers Dalton Burks and Danny Burks, daughter-in-law Cecyle Marrow Newsom, and father-in-law and mother-in-law Cub and Syble Newsom.
