Betty “Sue” Mixon was born March 12, 1941, to J. Carlyle Russell and Francis Kathryn “Kate” Jennings Russell in Roscoe, Texas. When she was a young child, the family moved to California for a brief time before returning to Littlefield, Texas where Sue met her lifelong Love, Jack Mixon. She was the youngest of three children, her brother, Rex Russell and sister, Rae Eddins who both preceded her in death.
She married Jack Mixon at Clovis, NM on October 15, 1957, at the age of 16. The couple raised four Daughters—Kelley, Karen, Jackie & Shawna. She shared all of life’s endeavors by Jack’s side for 53 years of marriage until his death on May 25, 2011. Sue was well known by everyone for providing critically important coaching and strict encouragement while instructing Jack as he was piloting a motor vehicle many times beyond it’s intended use and capabilities. Sue was a caring Mother, Grandmother (Ba) and Great-Grandmother to her Family.
Sue is survived by four Daughters: Kelley Sanders and husband Wade of Whiteface, Texas; Karen Mitchell and husband Ricky of Forrest, New Mexico; Jackie Van Staalduine and husband Moose of Foremost, Alberta Canada; Shawna Jameson and husband Jarrett of Glenn, Texas.
Ba’s Grandchildren are: Kandi Mitchell Wall and husband Josh along with Great Grands Levi and Mitchell Wall of Tucumcari, New Mexico; Bridger Sanders and wife Loni along with Great Grands Brayden Sanders, Branson Sanders, Brennan Sanders, Ariel Loftin and Kaydence Loftin of Sundown, Texas; Rowdy Sanders and wife Jamie along with Great Grands Lainey, Kambry & Ryken Sanders of Levelland, Texas; Haley Sanders Branscum and husband Cobey along with Great Grands Blaykin, Paisley and Steeley Branscum of Muleshoe, Texas; Kaitlyn Van Staalduine Heidinger and husband Grant along with soon to be Great Grand Baby Heidinger of Lethbridge, Alberta Canada; Brady Van Staalduine of Foremost, Alberta Canada; Kasi Van Staalduine of Lethbridge, Alberta Canada; Sierra Jameson Bersano and husband Andrew of Fort Worth, Texas and Jayda Jameson of Roaring Springs, Texas. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends that will she loved dearly.
Ba was preceded in death by a Grandson—J.T. Mitchell of Clovis, New Mexico on March 21, 2004.
Sue cherished her time spent with Family and visiting with Friends. Sue was known as “Momma Sue” or “Ba” to many young people and families throughout her lifetime. She loved animals, especially in her later life as she was attached to her pets. Sue enjoyed reading a good book, solving crossword puzzles, family cooking time together, sewing clothes from a new pattern, playing skipbo cards and a good game of dominos. As a young Lady, she enjoyed listening to Baseball on the radio with Paw Jennings. Sue was an avid fan of Dallas Cowboys football and Texas Rangers baseball. She was a faithful 4H leader, Adult Sponsor of Tri-State Rodeo Association and charter supporter of FFA. She enjoyed Youth Rodeo and Youth Agricultural Events. Sue and Jack were known for welcoming young people from all walks of life including foreign exchange students. She spent fulfilling time as a “Pink Lady” volunteering at Saint Mary’s Hospital at Lubbock. Sue loved her plants and flowers.
Sue passed from this life on January 7, 2025 in Levelland, Texas at the age of 83 years 9 months and 10 days during her sleep. Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep, If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take. Amen.
