Sherry Fred

Funeral services for Sherry Fred, 75, of Levelland will be Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017 at College Avenue Baptist Church, followed by burial in the City of Levelland Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 pm on Tuesday, January 31, 2017, at Krestridge Funeral Home.

Sherry was born April 16, 1941 in Albuquerque, NM to Sam and Joni Porter. Her parents, sister Sammie and brother Bobby moved to Afton, TX while she was still young. She grew up surrounded by extended family, and graduated from Patton Springs High School with the Class of 1959.

At South Plains College, Sherry was a Tex-Ann and member of other student organizations. Most importantly, she met Prentice Fred and they were married on Sept. 6, 1960. They made their first home in Levelland, then moved to Pettit where they raised their sons Robin and Scott.

When her boys were old enough, Sherry resumed her education at Texas Tech, earning her B.A. in Education. She took a job teaching third grade at Morton Elementary. After three years, she moved to a first grade classroom, where she taught for more than 25 years. As a mother, she was active in 4-H and all her sons' activities. At church, she taught Sunday School for more than 40 years and was a go-to person for taking care of people in their time of need. She touched many lives.

Sherry was always smiling, and usually asking someone else to smile so she could take their picture. She loved scrapbooking, gardening, and cooking. She made a mean coconut pie. She loved traveling with Prentice, even if it was on his motorcycle. She adored children, especially her grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Prentice, by her son Robin and his wife Sharon and son Brendan of Raleigh, NC; her son Scott of Pettit and his children Sarah Dunn and husband Chase of Levelland, Emily Fred of Fort Worth, Abbie Fred of Canyon, and Sam Fred of Lubbock; her daughter-in-law Belinda Fred of Lubbock; her sister Sammie Phillips of Matador; brother Bobbie Porter and wife Shirley of Mineral Wells; in-laws Patti and Stan Poff of Lubbock and Jan and Melvin Parkinson of Levelland; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
