Phyllis Joanne Edwards, 92, of New Home, Texas, went peacefully to be with the Lord on June 8, 2023. She was born October 8, 1930, in Edna, Kansas, to Wally and Kathryn Long. She graduated from Edna High School in 1948. Joanne then attended Coffeyville Community Junior College where she met her husband, Pete Edwards. They married on February 23, 1951. Together they moved to Lubbock, TX where Pete played football at Texas Tech University, and she worked in the athletic department.
After having lived in Levelland, Texas, and Hobbs, New Mexico, they eventually settled in Brownfield, Texas, where she was employed by Brownfield ISD as a school secretary for many years until she retired in 1987. She was busy during retirement. She spent several years caring for her parents and reconnecting with many, many cousins and friends back in Edna, as well as being extremely active in her community. Joanne then moved to Wink, Texas, to be close to her three grandsons and then made home in Levelland, Texas, to be close to her two granddaughters.
Joanne enjoyed all sports, especially the ones her grands were playing (Wink Wildcats and Whitharral Lady Panthers). She favored watching football (Texas Tech Red Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs) and basketball (Texas Tech Red Raiders, LA Lakers, Golden State Warriors). She always knew when her favorite teams were playing. When she wasn’t watching a sporting event, she enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles and spending time with her family.
She is preceded in death by both of her parents, her husband Pete in 1982, her oldest daughter Mary Ann in 2018, and her son Doug in 2001. She leaves behind a brother Leon of Berlin, Maryland, daughter Debbie Hamm (Gerry) of Midland, Texas, and daughter Nancy Paris (Ty) of New Home, Texas. Grandchildren, Duncan Hamm of Midland, Texas, Justin Hamm (Brandy) of Midland, Texas, Eathan Hamm (Lisa) of Granbury, Texas, Monica Beardemphl (Cord) of New Home, Texas, and Meagan Fossett (Robbie) of Lubbock, Texas. Great grandchildren, Welsey Taylor, Shanna Taylor, Peyton Hamm, Hayes Hamm, Jaxon Hamm, Lilly Hamm, Graham Beardemphl, Keller Beardemphl, and Collyns Kate Fossett.
A graveside service celebrating Joanne’s life will be held on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at the Levelland Cemetery in Levelland, Texas, at 11:00 AM, with Les Wilks officiating. Mother would love for you to make a donation to your favorite charity, any animal shelter or rescue shelter, or the Edna Public Library in Edna, Kansas.
Arrangements are under the direction and personal care of the professionals at Krestridge Funeral Home. (806)897-1111
