Melvin Benjamin “Benjie” Nelson Jr. went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, November 2, 2024. Born on September 11, 1958, he grew up in Levelland, Texas, where he graduated from Levelland High School in 1977. Benjie continued his education at South Plains College and attended Texas A&M University.
Benjie was welcomed into Heaven by his parents, Melvin Benjamin Nelson Sr. and Nell Sanders Nelson; his sister, Bonnie George Yates; his maternal grandparents, Velma Elizabeth Sanders and Union Horace Sanders; his paternal grandparents, Bessie Caroline Nelson and Carl Benjamin Nelson; and his beloved brother-in-law, Terry Ray Stroud.
Benjie’s heart was full of love for his two children, Kate Holcomb and Andrew Nelson, and his deepest joy was found in his two treasured grandchildren, John Michael Holcomb (10) and Scarlett Grace Holcomb (2). Lovingly known as Pa-Paw Benjie, he lit up with pride at every photo, message, and call from them, cherishing every moment spent together.
Benjie’s love for the Lord was evident in his deep knowledge of scripture and his unwavering faith. He was an inspiring example of Christian devotion to all who knew him. As a father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Benjie embodied loyalty, honesty, kindness, and generosity. He had a heart of gold and lived as a truly good man.
Throughout his career, Benjie made a meaningful impact across multiple industries, bringing passion, skill, and dedication to everything he did. His work was marked by integrity, hard work, and meticulous attention to detail. He spent over fifteen years with M&M Mars in Waco, Texas, retiring from the company in 2008.
Benjie is survived by his children, Kate Holcomb and Andrew Nelson; his son-in-law, Corey; his daughter-in-law, Josephine; his grandchildren, John Michael Holcomb and Scarlett Grace Holcomb; his sister, Jane Stroud; his niece, Tara; his nephew, Clint; and his grandnieces and grandnephews, Briar, Elias, Raston, Brixtyn, and Braycen.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 10, at Pine Ridge Missionary Baptist Church in Lawrence, Mississippi.
A celebration of Benjie’s life and graveside memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 23, at Levelland Municipal Cemetery, located on Avenue H in Levelland, Texas, through Krestridge Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest beside his beloved parents.
