Mary T. O'Canas

Mary Torrez O’Canas, 63 of Sundown, Texas, passed away on April 16, 2024 surrounded by her family.  Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Monday, April 22, 2024, with the Rosary being held at 6:00 pm at Krestridge Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the Sundown Cemetery.

Mary was born in Kearney, Nebraska on June 30,1960, to Librado and Esther Torrez. She attended Sundown ISD and graduated from South Plains College.  She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Her biggest accomplishment was her children, and she became a mother in 1977. She met the love of her life, Alvino Gaona, in 1991 and they spent 32 happy years together. 

Mary was a devoted mother, wife, sister, and grandmother. She spent her early years playing softball with her sisters and continued throughout her life, traveling to tourneys and even playing with her daughters as they grew up. She enjoyed listening to music, playing cards, cooking for her family, going to garage sales, picking peaches, and gardening. She loved traveling with her family to Ruidoso, Las Vegas, and Lockhart. She was passionate about cheering on the Dallas Cowboys and attended many games. Above all else, her family was what she held closest to her heart. 

She is preceded in death by her father, Librado Torrez, her mother, Esther Peralez Torrez, her sister Rachel Acosta, and her son-in-law Anthony Herrera. 

Those left to honor and cherish her memory include her husband, Alvino Gaona;, her children, Rocky O’Canas and wife Jessica O’Canas, Monica Salazar and husband Rafael Salazar, Veronica Perez and husband Jacob Perez, Dillon Paredez, and Cody Gaona and fiancée Maricella Sanchez; grandchildren, Katlyn O’Canas, Kaci O’Canas, Mayson Keneda, Ivy Gaona, and baby Perez; and her siblings, Esther Martinez, Edward Torrez and wife Rosa Torrez, Kathy Deleon, Irene Herrera and husband Israel Herrera, and Librado Torrez Jr. and wife Irene Torrez; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Serving as pallbearers will be Justin Torrez, Jonathan Torrez, Dillon Paredez, Martin O’Canas, Brayden Sanders and  Xavier Espinoza.  Honorary pallbearers will be Mayson Keneda and Jacobi Shaw.
