Kenneth F. Sheppard

On Wednesday, July 24, 2024, Kenneth Sheppard stepped into the arms of Jesus after faithfully serving Him for 95 years on this earth.

Born on September 15, 1928 in Powell, Texas to James Houston and Lucy Sheppard, Ken made his grand appearance in the middle of a thunderstorm. The robust, ten-pound baby boy rounded out the Sheppard family of five. Three years later, the family moved east due to a job transfer, and Ken spent his formative years in the small town of Price, Texas.

His mother, the church pianist, reserved a seat for Ken on the piano bench every Sunday. As her dedicated page-turner, Ken learned all the hymns in the Southern Baptist hymnal, and they never departed from his heart or lips. Ken possessed a love for singing and God blessed him with a beautiful voice, a gift he used daily. In sixth grade, Ken attended a revival and made the decision to commit his life to Christ, one from which he never wavered.

The effects of the World War II created a great desire within Ken to serve in the military, and as soon as he was able to enlist, he joined the US Navy and served his country. When his time of service ended, Ken’s hunt for employment landed him Levelland, Texas, where he began a successful career in the oil field, working for Amoco, and met the love of his life, Sue Heath Sheppard. The two married on October 23, 1953 and together, built a beautiful family.

Ken Sheppard lived a life of service, bearing the fruit of the Spirit in every season. He not only served his family wholeheartedly, he also served his church family and community to the fullest. Some of his greatest years were spent singing in the FBC Levelland SONShine Choir and Men’s Ensemble. He served as a deacon, an interim music director, a Sunday School teacher, and held various roles within the church. His love for God ran deep, and because of his faith, his life was marked by kindness, humility, wisdom, and generosity.

Ken’s entrance into Heaven came with a great reunion, as he met his Savior and joined his parents, siblings, numerous family members and countless friends. He is survived by his beloved bride of seventy years, Sue Heath Sheppard. Three children: son Larry Sheppard (Kristy) of Broken Arrow, OK; daughter Debbie Moore (Robert) of Sweetwater, TX; daughter Kenda Hurst (Britt) of Lubbock, TX. Nine grandchildren: Kenlee Blake Hurst (Lacye), Nathan Sheppard, Joshua Sheppard (Jessica), Lauren Moore Greenfield (Chad), Brittnye Hurst Davis (Aaron), Johanna Sheppard Banuelos (Bryan), Meghan Moore McCarty (Joseph), Jeremiah Sheppard (Kea), Timothy Moore (Alexis) of Lubbock, TX. And thirteen great-grandchildren: Graham and Grace Greenfield; Annabeth and Madelyn Davis; Nora, Abigail, and Emma McCarty; Audrey and Jax Hurst; Avery and Oliver Sheppard; Luca Banuelos; Trooper Moore.
