Jimmy Lee Welch went to heaven on Wednesday, November 17, 2021. He was greeted there by his daughter, Julie Welch, and two of his grandchildren, Matt and Mindy Stanley. Those of us left behind remember a strong, quiet man with a quick wit and sharp tongue. He never liked being the center of attention but was always on the sidelines cheering on those he loved. He was immensely proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Especially those who played basketball.
Jim was born February 23, 1937, the oldest of three children, to Herbert and Willie Mae Welch. Pettit was his home. Many cherished memories of old friends from Pettit were often told. It was there, in a little grocery store, where he met Jeanette Hogue, his future wife, who he called Hun. They were married in her brother’s house on Jul 10, 1955. After the wedding, they moved to Levelland where she doted on him for 66 years.
Jim was a cotton farmer all his life. He kept his head down and his hands dirty trying to cultivate a crop and raise a menagerie of animals. But the best of days were spent at the lake, skiing on the slopes, or hunting with his buddies.
Jim was a friend you could always count on. Showing up with a few tools, he would tile, fix a pipe, or add an addition onto your house.
As his body became more frail John Wayne kept him company.
His sweet tooth was legendary. Jeanette kept the freezer stocked with fudge and the pantry with Oreos.
It wouldn’t be wrong to call him strong-willed and occasionally stubborn, but when he cut his eyes to the side and offered a half grin you couldn’t help but grin too. The sparkle in his mischievous eyes will be forever remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Services for Jim will be held at Kerstridge Funeral Home Chapel in Levelland, on Monday, November 22, at 10:00 am. Visitation is Sunday at Krestridge Funeral home from 2:00-4:00.
Thank you to all those who have loved us through the years. You have rejoiced with us in good times and held us up through the tough moments. Your kindness is deeply appreciated.
