James Carroll McDonald of Wolfforth was born to James Verdell and Earline Lewis McDonald on December 22, 1946 in Levelland, TX. He passed from his earthly life on October 22, 2021 in Lubbock. Carroll graduated from Levelland High School in 1965, Sul Ross University in 1969, and then received his Masters of Education degree in 1976. Carroll began his coaching career in McCamey, TX followed by teams in Slaton, Post, Corpus Christi Calallen, and retired in 2003 from Frenship after 22 years with the beloved Tigers and the Davis staff (that he joined in 1975). Carroll was a Christian and a member of The Message church in Lubbock.
Carroll married Charlotte Strasner in DeLeon, TX on July 20, 1974 and in 1977 their daughter Sharon Renee was born. All of Coach Mac’s football players were his “extra kids” and he was a father figure to his 3 nephews and 23 foster children throughout the years.
Carroll and Charlotte enjoyed trips across the US on the motorcycle, lots of country dancing, and just spending time with great friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Marilyn Kay. Carroll is survived by his wife Charlotte, daughter Sharon Jeffreys and her husband Matt of Dallas, GA, grandchildren Jayci, Cade, Karis, Zane, and Zeke; nephews Micah of Pampa, Mason of Lubbock, and Mendall Edwards of Kyle and their families; several cousins including Wayne (Phyllis) Kemp of Roswell and his family; many friends and former athletes.
Memorial services for Carroll with be held at The Sage Chapel at Eberley Brooks Events at 10 am on Thursday, October 28. A private burial will be at a later date.
