Glenn Shirley, 93, of Levelland passed to heaven on September 29, 2017. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, October 4, 2017, in the Krestridge Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the City of Levelland Cemetery.
Glenn was born July 1, 1924 in Frederick, Oklahoma to James and Flossie Shirley. His family moved to the Clauene, Texas community of Hockley County in 1928 and saw many hard times and sandstorms.
Glenn served in the U.S. Army during World War II from April 1943 to December 1945 when he was honorably discharged at Fort Bliss. Glenn was a nineteen year-old soldier when he made an early beach landing in Normandy, France on D Day as part of the Signal Corp on June 6, 1944. He was later shipped to the Pacific, landing on Luzon and being prepared for the invasion of Japan when the atomic bombs were dropped on Japan to bring the war to a close. While serving in the military, Mr. Shirley received numerous decorations and citations including European, African, Middle Eastern Asiatic Pacific Theater, Philippine Liberation, Good Conduct, Distinguished Unit Badge, Bronze Arrowhead and Victory Medal.
Glenn returned to his West Texan roots and farmed the remainder of his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, eleven siblings and is survived by numerous nephews and nieces.
He was truly part of what historians consider America's Greatest Generation.
