Funeral services for Dale Thomas Hewitt, 89, of Whitharral will be at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at Krestridge Funeral Home Chapel with Jay Macha, Pastor of Whitharral Baptist Church, officiating. Visitation will be Monday, January 15th from 4 – 6 PM. Burial will be in the City of Levelland Cemetar. He slipped away peacefully to his Heavenly home Thursday, January 11, 2024 in Lubbock.
Dale was born March 1, 1934 on the family farm in Whitharral to Joel Thomas and Ella Burns Hewitt. Dale began school and graduated from Whitharral in 1952. Following graduation, Dale enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX. He was a member of Squadron 3723, Flight 365. He was a Staff Sergeant, while also being stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base in Witchita Falls, TX. Dale served 1 year in Casablanca, Morroco at Nouasseur Air Base. He then completed his service at Reese Air Force Base, Lubbock, TX where he was honorably discharged.
Dale met the love of his life, Gurli Engmann in December of 1956 while on holiday leave in Copenhagen, Denmark. Dale and Gurli corresponded by letter after he returned from his holiday leave. Dale returned in April to ask for Gurli’s hand in marriage. Gurli’s parents Alfred and Sofia, fell in love with Dale and gave Dale their blessings. Dale returned to Lubbock to complete his service in July 1957 with an Honorable Discharge. Dale returned to Copenhagen, Denmark where Dale and Gurli were married at Maria Kirken (Church) on August 20, 1957. In November, Dale brought his bride home to Whitharral where they made their home and resided for over 66 years. Dale was engaged in farming in Whitharral and was involved in various community organizations. Together they had three beautiful children, Mike, Brigette and Brenda whom were the joy of his life.
Dale and Gurli were the proud grandparents of two beautiful grandchildren, Mikka Dee and Ty as well as great grand-daughter, Penny. They were the light of his life. He loved and cherished his family. They are the legacy that he leaves behind. He loved them all dearly and faithfully cared for them during his lifetime.
Those left to cherish his legacy and memory are his devoted and loving wife, Gurli; daughters, Brigette and Brenda; daughter-in-law, DeRonda Hewitt; granddaughter, Mikka Dee Bayer (Michael); grandson, Ty Hewitt; and great granddaughter, Penny Bayer. Those also left to cherish Dale’s memory as well are numerous relatives, nieces, nephews and close family friends.
Dale Is preceded in death by his loving parents, Joel and Ella; his beloved son, Mike; twin brother, Doyle; sisters, JoNell Holmes and Shirley Mack; father and mother-in-law, Alfred and Sophia; as well as numerous aunts, uncles and relatives.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of the VA of Lubbock “Team Tango”, University Medical Center, South Plains Rehabilitation Hospital, Calvert Home Health and Hospice, Synergy Home Care and Cornerstone Caregiving.
